an update
Todd and Penguin has an update (of sorts) today. I uploaded a "best of" comic from 2006 because I haven't finished organizing my office and my computer and scanner are still sitting in a pile of wires. Good thing, too, because I am pretty unhappy with the comic I drew and need to redraw it completely.

In related news, both Todd and Penguin AND Taking Up Space will return with its unhappy comics for unhappy people next week.

Thanks to everyone who emailed or posted on the blogs in reference to the recent Sicily storyline. Today's Todd and Penguin closes out the story.

In other news: Check out Tony Piro's Calamaties of Nature which turned one on Tuesday. The comic is one of my new favorites. If you're a fan of Taking Up Space, you'll really enjoy it. Trust me. I enjoy Tony's drawing style and his use of color and his ability to draw really nice landscapes. And of course, the comic is funny and enjoyable.

In yet other news, Comixtalk was kind enough to invite me to draw the cover for the July issue. I believe it will debut sometime this weekend or Monday. I'd love to tell you what I drew, but I don't want to ruin it. You'll see two VERY familiar faces in the comic is all I will say for now.

Update, Baby V. Cat
The Wed. comic is now up. Don't miss Friday's conclusion to the storyline.

Baby Wright is starting to test his boundaries, it seems. He has taken to swatting at the cats. It started innocently enough as what appeared to be an attempt to pet the kitties many months ago. However, in his excitement, the petting became swats to the cats' heads. We directed him away from the cats, sometimes taking his hand and showing him the "correct" way to pet. However, he would just get excited and swat again. Our older female cat, Sweetie, loves any attention she gets, so she takes the abuse for a bit before running away. Our younger cat, Charlie, who is also known as Jerk Cat and Charlie Monster for his propensity to torment Sweetie, is a bit less tolerant of Baby. He kinda' looks at us as if to roll his eyes and say, "Hey, you do something with this kid, or I will."

Baby's swatting has now progressed to include pulling tails. To make matters worse, he knows he shouldn't be doing it. How do I know that he knows? Here's an example of what happens:

Baby runs to Charlie Cat with hands outstretched.

Daddy (from across the room): "No...."

Baby turns, looks at daddy, smiles, swats cat.

Daddy (still across the room) "No... (and then with as much enthusiasm as daddy can muster) hey, where's the ball? Ball? Ball? Where's the ball?"

Baby (not falling for the misdirection - daddy apparently didn't sell it enough) swats cat again. Cat's ears are pinned to his head as he swats back.

Daddy then bolts across the room to get Baby. Baby sees this, gets SUPER hyper (mouth open wide and smiling and laughing), and begins to swat cat faster and faster, in attempt to get in as many swats as possible before Daddy can reach him.

Well, Charlie ran out of patience today, grazing Baby's arm which required Mommy to break out the boo-boo kit. Still, Baby continued to go after both cats later in the evening. I'm fairly certain he is not intending to harm the cats. He is only 14 months old and an otherwise good baby. He seems to think they are playing a game of "Grab the Tail and Smack the Head (New, from Hasbro)".

I'm not sure what to do to resolve the issue. I don't want to overreact, especially when everything I've read says a baby his age doesn't understand consequences yet, so punishment has an adverse effect. Yet, we don't want him to torment the cats or to get hurt.

So, if any of you parents out there have any advice, feel free to email me or post a comment back.

updates, The Strangers, etc...
I saw the movie The Strangers and found myself rather depressed by the whole affair. Without spoiling the movie, it centers around boyfriend and girlfriend, James Hoyt and Kristin McKay, who are staying at a summer house following a friend's wedding. At 4 a.m., there is a knock at the door. What follows (and the commercials pretty much give this much away) is essentially an hour of three masked strangers tormenting the couple. Liv Tyler's performance was good and Scott Speedman's performance okay. While there is plenty of back story to their damaged relationship, beyond that, there is NO STORY.

"Inspired by true events" (meaning not a true story of this couple, but based on various crimes), the movie is cliche and predictable while lumbering along to an unsatisfying conclusion. Despite a lack of story, the movie is finely crafted. An example: when Kristin first realizes she is not safe in the home which only hours earlier had been relaxing and comforting, the camera work becomes jumpy and off kilter, lending to the feeling that nothing is safe, nothing is concrete, everyhing can change in an instant. The framing of shots was also excellent, with all the right things being shown... and hidden. Despite being well crafted, The Strangers was not enjoyable.

Maybe I'm just sick of this sort of horror movie that offers nothing of value. Some reviewers call the genre 'torture porn' and I would say that is a pretty good description (though to be fair, the violence in the movie is limited to a few scenes). Still, I felt numb after watching it. I'm not against movies which run along these themes if they bring anything new to the genre, such as the superb High Tension or the character-driven The Descent.

If you saw the movie, feel free to comment or email me your thoughts.

Now, on to the comic. A new Todd and Penguin is up tonight. Come back Friday for day 3 of uninterupted updates. Yes, I said Friday, all you doubters. Astute readers may recognize the landscape from today's strip from another of my comics.

updates
Every now and then I wonder if my time would be better spent pursuing something with a better chance of success than comics. If I spent half the time I spend on comic strips on freelance writing for magazines or even finishing one of my unfinished (and in many cases, unstarted) books, my odds of finding success would seem a bit better.

I thought about this last night when a really good idea for a story came to me. The moment felt like the old days, when I had a fairly easy job with lots of free time that allowed me to write nearly every night. First, the idea comes, followed by a few hours of thinking the story out, following each twist and exciting turn that it takes. Brainstorming a story is such a rush! There really is nothing else like it! Of course, the downside to that is that oftentimes, I overthink the story and wind up no longer interested in it by the time it is all worked out. I miss the process.

Now that I write for a living, the days of fiction writing (and time to pursue such) are a thing of the past. So, it was with some excitement that this new story came to me. Not sure what genre it would best be suited, as it contains elements of supernatural and sci-fi. Very light on the sci-fi, element, though. While I was happy to have this story come to me, unfortunately, I had a dilemma - I only have a little bit of time to work on my creative stuff and it usually goes to the comics. So, what to do?

Well, last night, I chased the story, ignored the comic, which is probably not a popular choice with those who visit my site to see a COMIC! (sorry, gang) But it was the right choice for me. I haven't finished the story yet and there are some things I'm not sure I like, but it felt good to write fiction for a change.

I'll consider putting the story online once its done, if it doesn't suck, that is. Anyone know any good sites for posting short stories? Maybe something with some networking and reader interaction?

But back to my original thoughts -- sometimes the easiest choice would be to end the comics and work on these other things which might have more of a chance of providing an income. One might say it is my responsibility to my family to do so. But I can't do that until I feel I've put forth an honest attempt to get syndicated.

For those wondering, the new Todd and Penguin will be delayed until Monday. I liked this Monday's comic. The problem with serious and depressing storylines with a comic that updates so infrequently is that it stretched on forever. I'm well aware that it can be tough on a reader, so I tried to interject some funny, while still pushing the storyline.

**Note to Rob, who asked how Stephen King's "Cell" is going. My hectic schedule has kept me from getting too far into the book yet, but I am looking forward to finishing it. Most of my recent reading has been limited to Wired magazine, a few nonfiction books and newsfeeds.

Is James Turner BLIND?
James Turner of the wonderful Beaver and Steve recently held a contest to find a guest artist for 5 or so comics. I, as well as SEVERAL others, entered, drawing a comic based on a script which he provided. Somehow, my work of genius was overlooked and this one chosen the winner. I didn't even make it among the runners up! I'm not sure how James does such a great job at Beaver and Steve, being obviously BLIND and all... SCREW YOU JAMES!

Nah, just kidding. There were lots of good entries, though I think I would've picked this cartoonish-styled one as the winner. Only after I drew my comic, did I see in the forums that he was encouraging people to interpret Beaver and Steve in their own style, rather than a duplication of his style.

On to Todd and Penguin...
Thanks for all the email regarding the comic recently. For those who thought Monday's comic was the happy ending of the storyline, you haven't been reading long, have you?

A new comic is up tonight. I think the last panel might be the most honest exchange I've ever drawn.

No new Taking Up Space this week, yet. Sorry. I'll try for Friday. I've been swamped. There WILL be a Todd and Penguin Friday, though. No... really.

Iron Man review, new comics
I, as well as about 15 billion others, saw Iron Man this weekend. Who knew the movie would do so well? It is a damned fun movie despite being formulaic and a well tread genre. You can thank Robert Downey Jr. for that. Given Iron Man's battles with alcoholism (not a storyline in this movie), the minute Downey was named as Tony Stark, I fell in love with the project. Downey has the skills to make anything work, especially a down and out alcoholic superhero. He brings so much to the character of Tony Stark, one can hardly imagine anyone else in the role. The movie certainly would NOT have been this good with any one else.

The plot is simple and predictable. If you can't tell what's going to happen 20 minutes before it does, you are likely a BIG fan of Lifetime Movies, in which case, you are also easily entertained. The special effects are well done, blending seamlessly into the movie, not calling attention to them often. It shows what good restraint can do for a superhero movie.

In case you saw the movie but didn't stick around until after the credits, you missed what would seem a hint at the movie's sequel starring a VERY familiar face. When I heard this person speak, I immediately was reminded of one of my other favorite movie endings. I won't say what, for not wanting to spoil Iron Man. Those who know who it is will probably guess the movie to which I am referring.

A new Todd and Penguin is up.

Tomorrow, I begin a new Weight Loss challenge.

Some of you may recall that I did this yearlong column for the newspaper I work for detailing my attempts to lose 100 pounds in one year. Well, it failed, but I've been challenged to take part in another one, this one 3 months long, and being run by the city. It should be interesting. I will go toe to toe with the Recreation and Parks Director. I tried to get a local elected official to get involved also. Was pretty close until that person decided they didn't want to A) give up eating and drinking and having fun B) fail publicly. Tomorrow is the weigh in and nearly 60 people have signed up as of a week ago. I'll keep you all posted on my progress. I hope to do much better this time around.

A new post, and comic
I spent the weekend catching up with many things and resolving none. In the background of doing a great many things, I found myself thinking about my various comic projects; the good and bad about each and how I can nudge each one along to what I want it to be. What surprised me most is that I found myself thinking A LOT about Girl and Monster, and wanting to return to that world.

I started Girl and Monster in October 2006 (foolishly optimistic that I would have time to draw it - and my other comics- right). It ran for one month and then was more or less put aside so I can get back to Todd and Penguin. The big problem with the comic is that there is a BIG story behind the whole thing. One with mystery and whimsical and dark fantasy elements. Something more than what is shown in the four panels. Something which takes TIME to tell. Unfortunately, telling a long story at 4 panels per week would be drawn out for far too long, so I scrapped it until I can do it right.

So, here's what I'm thinking... Scrap the four panel standard newspaper comic style and go with a once-per-week full page longer form (comic book) style. I'm still mulling it over, but as I do so, know that the story is slowly building, taking root and stretching deep into the earth while its branches reach skyward, stretching skyward.

Back to Todd and Penguin-land: there is a new comic today, continuing the ongoing tragedy of Sicily's accident. I've already been yelled at my mother for this depressing storyline. She asked if Sicily will die and then, "Isn't a comic supposed to be funny?!" (I hear that a lot when I do the serious comics, not to mention the supposed-to-be-funny comics).

That is all for now. Feel free to comment or email me with your thoughts on either Todd and Penguin or my plans for Girl and Monster or whatever else is on your mind.

Oh yeah, Taking Up Space will be back Wednesday. IF you missed last week's comic, it is still on the front page. Go check it out.

I'll post again Monday night and tell you about a cool comic I recently found.

Today's comic
This is the ad for today's comic which appeared in KeenSpot newsboxes across the network. Kinda' cryptic. Hopefully effective enough to get people to click. Of course, when they do, they will be treated to yet another of those stories which will have people asking what sort of medication I am on.
"Aren't comics supposed to be funny?" is usually what I get when I do stuff like this.
I'll provide you all with the background for this story once it has run its course.
As always, thanks for reading,
david

The phone
A new Todd and Penguin today. If you're wondering what commercial Penguin is talking about, you can check it out here. Unfortunately, I ran out of time before I could draw a Taking Up Space comic, which is a shame, because I spent several hours on Friday plotting the future of that comic. I was really psyched to get to it, but Todd and Penguin comes first, so long as it has the most readers. If you missed the most recent TUS, it touched on a rather popular (ie, overdone) news topic.

Sorry that I missed TWO updates last week. Balancing work and family life has been difficult of late. I know it's a sucky thing to keep telling people hey, 'sorry I couldn't update.' Sucky and unprofessional. But right now Baby Wright is going through his Needy Stage and is much more demanding of our time than he has been in the past.

Balancing the comic and home life is difficult when you aren't doing this professionally. Particularly when people expect professionalism from you. And I am a workaholic who always tries to bring professionalism to everything I do, however, when this is not the job that pays the bills, it's got to be the first thing set aside when obligations come up. My goal is to have this be my main career, then I can afford to devote the proper amount of time to do it 7 days a week.

I'm not complaining about family time, though. I enjoy watching Baby Wright learn new things.

On Valentines Day he stood up by himself for the first time. Now (at 11 months old) he is starting to walk around the house! He started with a few steps at a time, then he would fall back on his but. Within a week or so, he began taking 4, then 8 steps. Now, he is taking as many as 20 steps before falling down. However, he is determined, and pops right back up!

Crawling is still his preferred method of travel, though, if he is in a hurry. Sometimes, he will start to stand, then decide instead to do a crab crawl, with his hands outstretched and his but in the air. It's a funny site.

Most funny though, is something which began last weekend.

My dad called and I handed the phone to Baby Wright to see his reaction.

He smiled, seemingly recognizing grandpa's voice. He didn't talk back or anything, he just kinda' looked at the phone.

Then when I hung up, he wanted the phone back. I handed it to him, and he lifted it to the side of his face (though it was upside down) and he began talking into it! Well, blabbing, as he doesn't speak words yet.

My wife and I were laughing so hard. And of course, he smiled. He knows when he's made you laugh, and will try to repeat whatever he did. I realized he was a little comedian when he was about 6 months old or so and my wife and I were shopping and he was in his car seat inside the shopping cart. He made a weird face which we'd never seen before and my wife started cracking up. He immediately did it again and again.

Eventually, I took the phone away so he wouldn't poke himself with the antenna stub (or call China). Then he picked up his remote (we gave him his own remote - without batteries- so he can be like daddy) and he put the remote up to his face like it was a phone and began talking into it! Then, during the week, he would simply hold his hand up to his face pretending he had a phone (or a remote!) and say "bab babababa."

Here's a pic. And before anyone thinks I let my son walk around like Mr. McMessyFace, I don't. His face and clothes are not usually that messy. I swear, your honor! He'd just finished eating when my dad called and it was close to bath time.

However, he IS normally holding a sock, or some other item. He likes to walk around while holding two items (one in each hand) whenever possible. Socks are a favorite for either hands or mouth. Give him two socks and he'll be content for an hour.

The new old and some pearls to consider
Like I mentioned in my previous post, I will be taking some time off from Todd and Penguin while I help get the house ready for our baby that's on the way. One week into my hiatus, I found myself doodling rather than working... but it wasn't the good natured Penguin comic. It was my dark child, Taking Up Space.

Thanks to Stephan Pastis of Pearls Before Swine, for bringing Taking Up Space back.

You see, while I had heard of the comic, I'd not really read it until maybe a month ago or so, following an interview I read with Pastis, where he seemed like a really cool guy. He also spoke of how he met Peanuts creator, Charles Schulz, which is an inspirational sort of story. So I checked out his comic and I love it! For one, it is doing something that I have wanted to do for the longest time - it blends dark with cute in a way that works well AND is syndicated.

When I first started Taking Up Space in 2002, it was borne of my desire to do something edgier, darker, something that allowed me to express my darker take on things. The humor, centering on things like death, is much more in line with my day-to-day sense of humor, while Todd and Penguin is probably the G-rated Dave. While I was aiming for dark and edgy, I couldn't keep cute out of the comic (enter Alexander, the hapless rabbit).

I love Taking Up Space. It was my first published work, too, in the Stanford Daily. However, I couldn't get Penguin out of my head, and had only time to draw one comic. I chose Penguin and put Taking Up Space back in the closet.

I take it out from time to time, turn it in my hands, maybe rework it a bit, and attempt to bring it back into the light. However, Penguin always calls, like the annoying cookie-starved avian he is and Taking Up Space always goes back into the closet.

In a perfect world, I could combine Todd and Penguin AND Taking Up Space. However, I didn't know how that would sit with longtime Todd and Penguin readers.

Now, after buying the first Pearls Before Swine treasury on Friday, I find myself dusting the comic off again and contemplating some way to bring the Todd and Penguin characters into Taking Up Space. It would indeed be the best of both worlds.

There are some barriers which I have to consider before making the leap, but Todd and Penguin could soon become Taking Up Space, featuring Todd and Penguin.

Speaking of Penguin, during my hiatus, I am posting the very first horribly drawn comics from November 2000 on the site. Some of you may recall that I lost the Nov. 2000-March 2001 comics when KeenSpace crashed back in 2002. I thought they were lost forever, but they have been found and should be somewhat interesting for 95% of my readers who weren't around back in 2002.

Wow.
Lately, I have been VERY frustrated with my drawing, or lack of drawing ability. I have struggled to draw better comics than I've done lately. I've also been struggling to find out which comic I should devote more of my energies to. Todd and Penguin, Girl and Monster, or Taking Up Space.

Part of me would love to take some time off and just concentrate on getting better and figure out what I want to do.

Tonight, while checking out other sites, I stumbled on an artist who amazed me. Mélanie Delon, a french artist who paints digitally, using nothing but a sylus and Photoshop, and creates some very beautiful stuff. Here's the kicker, she's only been doing it for a year.
While you're at it, check out her DeviantArt page here.

I stumbled on this site, via the Lines and Colors blog.

Lastly, I can't wait to see Pan's Labyrinth. In case you haven't seen a preview, check out the trailer at the official site. It looks beautiful!

So tired.
Wow, today was a long day.

I bought these non-reproduction blue pencils. The idea is that you can pencil in the blue lines, then just ink over, without the need to erase the lines, because a scanner won't pick them up. A wonderful idea in concept, because I hate erasing. It takes too long to get all the pencil marks. So, I was TRYING to save time.

In theory, the pencil should work... In theory.

However, the scanner picked up lots of the pencil, meaning the scans of my drawings were all dirty looking with tons of stray pencil marks. I was going to erase the lines and then re-scan, but guess what, this pencil I got, doesn't erase!

So, I had two choices, redraw the comics in regular pencil, re-ink and erase them, OR... go in and clean them up manually during the coloring process via my art program. I chose the latter, thinking it would take less time.

It didn't.

The comics from start to finish took about eight hours!

Then I spent the rest of the night working on a story for the newspaper.

I hate Sundays.

Thanks for allowing me to bitch. I promsise a more entertaining post next time.

An update of sorts
I've gotten quite a bit of email this week (some which I still need to respond to) asking where Todd and Penguin and Girl and Monster are.

This has been a busier week than usual at the paper. I worked a few late late nights on a story which I can't go into detail about. So, the comic is the first to suffer.

I wish it weren't the case, believe me. I would love to have more time to draw the comics. In an ideal world, I would be syndicated and making enough to focus on just the comics.

But alas, this is not an ideal world.

All week I've been contemplating Todd and Penguin and Taking Up Space and mulling over the possibility of combining them into one comic. It would give me a chance to be more topical and darker yet I could still keep the sweet stuff.

I could alienate Todd and Penguin fans by doing so.

9 out of 10 people I know prefer Taking Up Space. However, if you look at readership, Taking Up Space doesn't have nearly the numbers Todd and Penguin has. Though, given that Todd and Penguin is more established and publishes more regularly, readership numbers might not be an accurate guage of what is more popular.

Feel free to weigh in here or email me your thoughts.

Confusion
I'm facing a crisis over Girl and Monster. I'm not happy with the comic yet. It's been two months and I still don't like what I'm seeing. I put a lot (over two years) of planning time into the comic, so I'm kinda' surprised I'm not liking it more than I am. I hope once the intitial storyline is over, and it gets into a regular groove, I'll like it more.

To be honest, the more I draw Girl and Monster, the more I want to start Taking Up Space again. Which brings me to the same problem that keeps rearing its head... Too many ideas, not nearly enough time.

If only I could combine all the comics into one. I know I can't do that with Girl and Monster, but... maybe, I could combine Todd and Penguin and Taking Up Space?

I dunno'.

Speaking of Todd and Penguin, today's is based on my own cat, Charlie.

Well, I'm off. Back to work at the paper tomorrow.
